Heritage International School

Kampala, Uganda

The Arts department of Heritage International School seeks to speak to the whole child by strengthening their divergent thinking skills, developing their imagination, and encouraging their intimacy with God.  Art is a unique way to discuss truth, beauty, and culture.  Other skills obtained through practice of the Arts include courage to be creative, perseverance through obstacles, and commitment to excellence.  Through the Arts, students at Heritage have an opportunity to discover more fully that they are made in His image.DSC09683

Fine Arts

In art class, students begin to understand that every person can create because we were made in the image of the greatest Creator of all! Students are not allowed to quit when they are frustrated and some of the best pieces come from that determination.  Students are constantly learning new skills and surprising themselves.  Even those who are not the best artists begin to realize that their piece is real art. Art is a required course from Kindergarten through Grade 8. High school students may take electives that focus on particular skills such as sketching and drawing, watercolors, and more.

In Early Years, students cover singing, action songs & playing untuned percussion instruments such as maracas & drums. The songs are usually linked to a related curriculum theme, such as animals or parts of the body. The emphasis is always on having fun through musical exploration!

In Elementary, students begin to study the elements of music (rhythm, tempo, pulse etc.) through performance on tuned & untuned percussion instruments, as well as recorders & students' own instruments (clarinet, violin etc). Students have a chance to compose their own music & perform for others. Music is fun as well as educational, whether played, sung or created!

Middle School students continue to build on the foundational elements covered in Elementary. They also choose an instrument to focus on and develop their skills further in. Students have opportunities to perform at curricular concerts every semester.

In High School, students can choose to participate in music electives such as High School Band.

Private instrumental lessons are available after school for a variety of instruments including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, guitar & piano. Instruments can be borrowed from the school.

Drama and Dance

Drama and dance courses are offered at various age levels. These subjects bring art and music to life, allowing students to learn creative moment, stage presence, and so much more. We also provide further dance and drama opportunities through our after-school programs.

Every year students have the opportunity to participate in our annual production. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to be involved in the arts in a fun and challenging way. Students may participate as actors, singers, set-design and stage hands, ushers, dancers, and more! Recent productions have included Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, and the Music Man.
